DVD collections can look cluttered. Cheevarut/ShutterstockThough your stack of limited-edition DVDs can be a great conversation starter, they're going to make your room look busy and overwhelming. Giant stacks of books or movies can be visually distracting but a storage solution will give your space a less cluttered atmosphere and make the room more relaxing. A good storage solution for movies and books is also a great way to visually conceal the items while keeping them in one desired location. Many bookshelves or media stands have closed fronts with drawers or doors to conceal miscellaneous items.
They were moved straight to our shiny new storage unit, and the plan was to move them into our temporary rental a few weeks later. Wouldn't it be better to show our apartment if we didn't have boxes in the way and there was less clutter everywhere? We decided to leave the boxes in the storage unit for the moment. All of a sudden, week by week, we were making pilgrimages to the storage unit, tossing out boxes we could live without. It still wasn't good timing for real estate, so we moved the lot of it into a smaller storage unit and immediately lopped hundreds of dollars a month from our budget.

In a public library, styling a bookshelf is easy: Just fill it with books. At home, a bookcase needs to do a lot more than hold books. So how do the pros do it? Start by thinking of your shelves as a kind of three-dimensional wallpaper that adds visual interest to a room. The things you choose to display should express your personality.

In 2013, I made a seemingly simple decision: I started a list of books I wanted to read. AdvertisementI couldn't do that because if I threw away the book list, I would have to make a conscious choice. When I lost my book list, I actually felt freeTwo months ago, I reorganized my cloud account where the list was kept. Ever since my therapist had introduced the idea of throwing the list away, I had fantasized about the moment but never actually committed to it. Thus, I declare this the year of re-reading books I've loved in the past without worrying that I'm not spending my time reading something new.

It was inevitable that Liz Cheney’s new memoir would cause a splash. The memoir, “Oath and Honor,” arrives on bookshelves just as Mr. Trump is poised to reclaim the Republican presidential nomination in primaries beginning in a few weeks. But beyond its top-line arguments, the book offers a rare peek inside the Republican cloakroom at what Ms. Cheney, a former representative from Wyoming, heard from her colleagues about “the Orange Jesus,” as one wryly called Mr. Trump. Trump Republicans took Cheney’s stand personally. After Ms. Cheney spoke out against Mr. Trump and voted to impeach him, she faced a backlash from fellow Republicans accusing her of disloyalty.

Nicole, a third-grade teacher, believes teachers need more money from schools for supplies and materials. Based on documentation shared with Insider, Nicole had spent a minimum of $4,000 of her own money on classroom materials and supplies since 2019. "Teachers said the median classroom school supply budget during the 2022-2023 school year was $200," a post about the results on AdoptAClassroom.org said. Nicole said that if teachers only spent the money given to them, "it would make our lives very difficult." As a result, books like “Call Me Max” have been challenged or outright removed from schools and libraries in Florida, as well as other states — and though some believe book bans lead to more book sales, authors say the effect of those bans is devastating for their careers. These bans “overwhelmingly” target books about race and racism, as well as books with LGBTQ characters, PEN America said in its September study on school book bans. The MoveOn Banned Book Mobile stops for an event with local authors and teachers on October 1, 2023 in Decatur, Georgia. “(A book ban) would make news, and people would say, ‘I’ll buy this book just to show them,’” Lukoff said of the once-common result of book bans. Lukoff said his first high-profile bans occurred in early 2021, in Austin and Salt Lake City, when book bans first started to accelerate.

New York CNN —Ikea is opening a new store in downtown San Francisco Wednesday, bucking the trend of retailers closing in the city. Ikea is opening a new store this week in downtown San Francisco at 945 Market Street. While violent crime statistics in San Francisco have remained relatively low in recent years, property crimes have risen since 2020, according to San Francisco Police Department data. Activity this spring in downtown San Francisco, as measured by mobile phone use, was 68% below its pre-pandemic levels, the largest decline of any US city. In June, shopping mall operator Westfield announced it would give up control of its San Francisco mall, citing “challenging operating conditions in downtown San Francisco, which have led to declines in sales, occupancy and foot traffic.”A month earlier, Nordstrom, one of the biggest retailers in Westfield, said it would shutter both of its San Francisco stores.
